Morsels & The Shelf Life

The Manning Road Farmers Market is the Perfect Start to Your Saturday

The Manning Road Farmers Market is one of Perth’s biggest and best farmers markets, being home to over 90 stalls. It brings together a diverse range of local farmers, growers, artisan food producers and craft businesses.

The stallholder line-up changes from week to week, so thereโ€™s always something new to discover. You’ll meet all your food and gift-based needs from farm-fresh fruits and vegetables to artisan bread, free-range eggs, home-made preserves and delicious street food.

A number of stalls sell certified organic and biodynamic fruit and vegetables, alongside vendors offering certified organic olive oil, olives, eggs, dry goods, beef and lamb.

The Manning Road Farmers Market is a great family destination with a relaxed and welcoming vibe. It’s dog friendly, and there’s plenty of free parking, toilets and seating. It will be open this coming Easter Saturday, April 19.

A list of stall holders – and a map of where to find them – is published every week on social media, so be sure to follow the Markets on Instagram and Facebook.

We spoke with five of the Manning Road Farmers Market’s longest standing vendors to learn more about them, and what they love most about the Market.

Mocha Maestro

Every Saturday has to start with a great coffee, and coffee van Mocha Maestro is a regular fixture at the Market. Offering plenty of caffeinated options – and a selection of alternative milks – it’s the ideal place to begin your visit. Beans are from Perth-based roaster Giotto Coffee, and they also serve syrups and a selection of teas,

“We love the markets. We have lots of regulars, they’re very loyal,” says the Mocha Maestro himself. “We do our best to try and make them happy.”

Mr Pashy

Mr Pashy by Appletech is a family-owned and operated Manjimup business that started growing apples in 1962. Driving to Perth every Friday afternoon for the Market, Mr Pashy sells its passionfruits alongside produce from other Manjimup farms. Mr Pashy is the project of fourth-generation farmers Tom and Liam.

“We started coming to the farmers markets back in 2018, as we were frustrated with the market system in Canning Vale,” explains Tom and Liam’s father Nick.

“We’ve got a boutique fruit orchard with a bit of everything – about 2,000 lines of passionfruit, 1,500 lemon trees, feijoias and pomegranates. We help out other other Manjimup growers who are struggling, and source other fruit from through the Southern Forest Food Council, for example avocados and figs.”

High Frequency Matcha

If coffee isn’t your thing – and even if it is – High Frequency Matcha should be on your to-do list for any visit to the Market. Their matcha is a high-quality product sourced from Japan, prepared to order with care using traditional methods (don’t panic, they have strawberry too).

“We started exploring coffee alternatives about a year ago. We discovered matcha, then going deeper found that it can be great but also very average in many places,” explains co-owner Scott.

“The Market was an excellent place to start and get feedback, but also we’re surrounded by a community of very conscious people who are into nourishment. Matcha is a tool to give more wellness and balance, and our goal is to help nourish people to spiral up to their higher selfs.”

The Butter People

Husband and wife team Kylie and Kris from The Butter People are two of the nicest people in Perth’s artisan food community, and offer an oustanding range of local products. Their butter is made from cream without any preservatives, thickeners or gums. It’s 100% natural, grass-fed butter made in the traditional batch churn style.

“What I love about the Market is the quality of the products and good community vibe. Everyone’s very positive,” says Kris. “Customers appreciate being to able meet the person who makes the product. We have full transparency around what we do and why we do it. You can’t get that from a supermarket.”

Their butter is a great way to experience the difference an artisan product can offer. The stall also sells milk from Bannister Downs Dairy, cheese from Vic Park burrata legends La Delizia Latticini and yoghurt from Paris Creek Farms.

Bratwurst With Attitude

Coffee may be an essential start to the day, but so is breakfast, and what better choice than a traditional German bratwurst with all the trimmings (sauerkraut, onions, sauce and spices) from Bratwurst with Attitude.

“We have a lot of regulars, we’ve been coming here for the last 15 years”, says owner Sabine Podgorny, who runs the business with husband Armin.

The option to have your sausage pre-cut and served in a bowl is a brilliant idea. It’s an easy way to eat as you move around the Market, saving a lot of fuss and mess, and a bargain at only $8. Of course you can have it in a bun if you wish, but we suggest saving some space for a sweet treat or maybe even a second bratwurst!
