Earlier this week I headed north to check out The Central at Butler, a restaurant and bar located within Butler Central Shopping Centre. It has everything that such a suburban venue should have – live sports, entertainment, mid-week dining deals, a well-stocked bar and it’s family friendly.
Of course I went to check out the food, which is a comprehensive offering of crowd-pleasers from steaks to burgers, pasta, pizza and of course a parmi. The most interesting section of the menu is the snacks, which includes a variety of dishes from loaded fries to dates with bacon and blue cheese, and seared scallops with chorizo and saffron.

The dishes we tried were:
- Berkshire pork Scotch egg, pickled red cabbage, devil mayo, house HP sauce
- loaded “Piggy” fries, pulled pork, nacho cheese sauce, smashed avocado, mozzarella, pico di gallo
- pulled pork tacos, slaw, pineapple cowboy candy, crispy onion
- The Central (steak) Sando – 160g scotch fillet, cheddar, red onion marmalade, aioli, rocket, thick cut ciabatta
- balsamic roast baby beets, fetta, hazelnut, pickled pear
- hot sausage pizza – pepperoni, mozzarella, hot honey
- apple and blueberry crumble, custard, white chocolate ice-cream
- orange marmalade glazed bread and butter pudding, chai tea gelato, pistachio
The clear highlight was the steak sandwich, which was no surprise given The Central was a finalist in this year’s “WA’s Best Steak Sandwich Competition“. For me, there was nothing either missing or unnecessary.
The beautifully-presented Scotch egg was still warm, the tacos substantial and the crisp pizza generously topped. Dessert is no afterthought, and I couldn’t stop eating the warm, moreish crumble long after I should have.

It’s important to note that this is “pub” food, which is a category fraught with peril and it’s easy to spend a lot on some very average food. The food I experienced at The Central, however, was very much above-average; even watching the chef showed a level of care and precision higher than I would expect from such a venue. Now I think about it, I’d happily have that steak sandwich and crumble again for dinner tonight.
One thing to take note of are the daily specials, e.g. Taco Tuesday (four for $20), Wicked Wing Wednesday (1Kg for $20) and a three-course Monday and Tuesday lunch for just $20 that’s available to everyone. There’s no need to borrow or steal Grandma’s pension card – at this price, you can afford to feed her too.
The Central at Butler is open every day from 11am to 9pm, and is a great place to visit if you live nearby or are in the area looking for somewhere to rest, eat and drink.
