Restaurant Review: Avalon, Claremont

Avalon is a Mediterranean fine-dining restaurant located at the base of a Claremont apartment building. It’s an elegant affair, and it only takes a quick glance around the dark but elegant dining room to confirm this restaurant means business.

Dining at Avalon is a very intentional experience; each well-spaced table is yours for the night, regardless of when you arrive or how long you want to stay. Live music and dining specials change every night to keep things fresh for regulars.

Co-founded by Italian Simone Sichel and Greek Executive Chef George Tsimpidis, Avalon offers a mix of Mediterranean dishes and global influences. Diners can choose al a carte or tasting menus with wine pairing options.

The dishes we tried were:

  • Spanakopita – spinach pie, filo pastry, feta mousse, herb salad
  • Pan-fried goat’s cheese salad, coral lettuce, dried figs, roasted walnuts, beetroot puree, Manuka honey dressing
  • Beef Wellington, glazed asparagus, almond zaโ€™atar, Talijancich liqueur Verdelho sauce
  • Pan-seared Western snapper, confit fennel, chestnut mushrooms, clam saffron sauce, zaโ€™atar
  • Spice glazed rainbow carrots, ricotta, pistachio crumb
  • Strawberry yuzu delight, mojito sorbet, mint biscuit
  • Paris-Brest – choux pastry with mandarin cream, praline, caramelised hazelnuts

The highlights were the Spanakopita and impressively-constructed Wellington, a dish suitable for sharing and accompanied by one of the best sauces I’ve had in Perth. I’m not usually a fan of restaurant desserts, but the Paris-Brest was difficult to fault and would be hard to ignore on any return visit.

There’s an extensive wine list, with bottles on display around the restaurant to help set the tone. There’s enough by-the-glass for the casual drinker, and bottles to suit every budget.

The intimate setting joins $50-ish mains to make Avalon an ideal date night and special occasion restaurant. It’s the kind of venue that wouldn’t be out of place half-way up a Sydney hotel, and there aren’t many Perth restaurants that evoke that feeling. If this sounds like your kind of place, Avalon is definitely one for the to-do list.
