Top of my post-toastie-battle Margaret River list was a visit to Normal Van, an American-inspired diner (no longer a van) that has become legendary in the South-West for its burgers and elevated takes on comfort food. It’s the brainchild of partners Canadian chef Rob Webster and wine-makerย Jess Waldron.ย
Their Wednesday Cabin Fever event with chef Brendan Pratt is one of the reasons I’m in the region, but I wasn’t going to pass on a normal lunch (groan) first.

Normal Van is the kind of place where you won’t be disappointed with whatever you choose, as there’s quality and attention to detail everywhere; even the bread is Rob’s recipe and condiments are made in-house.
The burgers are outstanding and the mac, cheese & brisket slab is a meal in itself. But whatever you do, don’t overlook the chips. I tried, and ended up eating more of them than anything else. Live and learn.

Try and leave room for dessert, too; the brown sugar vanilla soft serve with miso butterscotch sauce and waffle cone sprinkles is as good as it sounds, and slightly more adult than you might expect.
Dietaries are well catered for and the venue is licensed, with Jess’s Jingalup Wines available. Normal Van is a no-brainer to visit at least once when youโre in the area.
