I enjoyed another meal at Brown Street Grill this week, a restaurant that's quickly become one of my Perth favourites. Skillfully using fire to bring out the best in quality ingredients, it's hard to beat when it comes to value for money.

I was excited to try the pictured citrus & pistachio mille feuille with yuzu curd, mandarin and mascarpone cream. I'm a citrus-lover and very happy that we're now growing Yuzu locally. I'd go as far as declaring this my all-time favourite dessert (a big call, but no regrets).

Other dishes pictured here:
- grilled heirloom carrots, whipped Bookara goat's feta, walnuts, pomegranate
- Futari Wagyu skirt, roasted bone marrow, blue cheese butter, salsa rosso
- woodfired flatbread, whipped garlic potato, smoked capsicum & charred chilli salsa
- wood roasted okra, mole spiced sweet potato, spiced pepitas

I returned to UMA in the Pan Pacific last week to check out the new "Journey to Peru" menu. UMA is one of Perth's best - and most unique - dining experiences and once again it didn't disappoint. Highly recommended if you're new to Peruvian cuisine. The service is always attentive, too.

Dishes pictured here:
- Pionono (dessert first!) Lucuma cream, dulce de leche sponge, raspberry sorbet, quinoa coffee crumb, seasonal fruit
- Ceviche Peruano; cured Shark Bay fish, leche de tigre, charred sweet corn, caramelised sweet potato
- seasonal vegetables, straciatella
- egg yolk bread, whipped feta & garlic dip
- alpaca shoulder dumplings, alpaca jus
- beef rump cap skewers, smoked potato puree
- vegetarian pasta
- half roasted chicken, Peruvian spices

It's jaffle Sunday on MasterChef, and the lovely folks at Channel 10 sent me everything I needed to recreate Jock Zonfrillo's favourite jaffle - mortadella, cheese and green olive. They even supplied a Breville "Original 74" jaffle maker, a solidly built tribute to the classic model.

There's a few interesting things going on in this jaffle - no butter (the bread is sprayed with red wine vinegar), mozzarella and smoked cheeses, and mortadella on the outside of the sandwich. It practically becomes one with the bread, and is a clever move indeed.

It's a fine sandwich, with the vinegar and olives bringing a sharpness that cuts through the meat & cheese. Swipe through to see the recipe and try it for yourself.

Tune in to MasterChef at 7:30pm tonight on Channel 10 for all the jaffle challenge action!

One of the many new eateries in the Karrinyup Shopping Centre is CBD street food favourite Baguette Me Not. It offers a range of banh mi inspired dishes including baguettes, bowls, bao buns and tacos.

There are plenty of vegetarian and vegan options, and coffee is from Melbourne-based SOCO Roasters.

There's plenty to choose from including a crisp-crackling pork belly banh mi and the popular "Egg Sheeran" bowl featuring lebanese cucumber, pickled carrots, brown rice, fried egg, mayo, spring onions, fried shallots, coriander, chillies and your choice of protein.

Everything I've tried from Harvey Beef has been excellent - sausages, burgers and of course the pasta sauces that live in my fridge now. I hadn't got around to trying the pies but when I saw these satay ones in Coles I couldn't resist.

I've been guilty of buying a satay pie from a dodgy bakery on more than one occasion, and these take it to another level. They may not be authentic but there's quality beef, nuts, spice, heat and most importantly a deep, rich flavour. The meat has been cooked down enough to be very soft, and there's nothing to fault with the pastry. I even cooked them in my air fryer 😳

Highly recommended. I'll be trying the others in the range.

I was expecting this to be either an exciting revelation or the bitterest thing I'd ever put in my mouth. It wasn't either, but it's unfortunately towards the bitter end. Cheap dark chocolate and coffee beans really shouldn't play together 😣 (and how dark is 45% anyway??)

Today we're trying the new Snickers Peanut Brownie, which replaces the nougat with brownie.

It's mushier and less-chewy than a normal Snickers, which seems odd to start with. Things get weirder when the familiar Snickers flavour abruptly disappears when you eat the flavourless brownie. I felt like I was robbed mid-mouthful, and this was a disappointing experience in every way.

Try if you're curious. I've seen these in @7elevenaus and @woolworths_au

Despite my love of spicy food, I've recently become tired of hot snacks. They often feel very lazy, without any real thought given to taste or enjoyability. These new Twisties, however, are an exception.

Available exclusively at 7-Eleven (not sure if that's permanent), these limited edition Twisties are flavoured with familiar "Doritos Flamin' Hot Cheese Supreme". As you would expect, it's a well-developed flavour and works well here. The heat grows on you without tearing your throat out.

Fan of Twisties and like some heat? Definitely give these a go. A unique Twisties experience.

I've had these "Premium Selection ham & cheese slices" in my freezer for a while now, and decided to cook one for an afternoon snack today.

I'm sorry to say that I was a little disappointed, although in hindsight I should have realised they wouldn't look like the packet. The pastry is decent but as you can see there's nothing "oozy" about the filling. Perhaps unsurprisingly, it's the texture of a cheese and onion pastie - more quiche-ish than melty goodness. Cheesy, but the ham adds more fat (and a 2 health-star rating 😬)

Not bad, but not quite as advertised.

Today we're trying Birthday Cake flavoured yoghurt, complete with Minions. What exactly is birthday cake flavour, you ask? Good question...

I was expecting vanilla, and this rather intense yoghurt reminds me of the very strong fake vanilla from Yoplait multi-packs many years ago (that might be the same now, I must confess I haven't tried them in ages).

I didn't find this at all pleasant, although it's not like I was expecting real vanilla. Definitely one for the kids.

Looks like nobody fell for the overpriced and seemingly pointless Layers; now @cadburyaust has filled chocolate bars with nuts, changed the shape then marketed them as something new. Get ready for "More"...

There's 3 varieties. Dairy Milk with either nuts & salted toffee or... just nuts 🤔 and Old Gold with fruit and nut.

Surprisingly, I preferred the Dairy Milk with nuts & salted toffee. I'm not a fan of Dairy Milk but there's plenty of the other stuff to cause a distraction. I was really disappointed with the Old Gold, it's not great dark chocolate so the almonds and sultanas just get lost in the bitterness.

Should have been called "Same but Different". Try the Dairy Milk varieties if you like chocolate with your nuts.

We had (fantastic) crumpet toast. Then they replaced it with disappointing donut toast. Now it's scone loaf time, and I'm even more disappointed.

It sounds good, promising something sweet to dollop jam and cream on. But in reality, it's like very dense milk bread that is too sweet with a sweet topping and weird with a savoury topping. It takes a lot of toasting to get colour, too.

I'm not sure what it actually is, but thankfully it's limited edition. Bring back crumpet toast, please 😭

Limited edition ☑️ citrus fruits ☑️ mouthwash... okay then ☑️ zero alcohol 🤔

I found this in my local IGA for $4 (down from $10) so it quickly found its way into my basket. I actually find the medicinal orange flavour quite pleasant (yeah I'm weird) and it doesn't burn due to no alcohol. Probably means it's not doing anything either 😬😬

I can see this becoming a regular purchase. Now where's the gin? 😋

Like many, I was excited by Brownes Dairy bringing back Yogo (although I'm still waiting for the return of banana caramel 😬). This "vanilla custard" is a new variety.

Perhaps it's just me, but I expected something that tastes like custard. There's a hint of vanilla, and it's the appropriate Yogo texture, but it does not taste like custard. Boo. Disappointed.

These Veggie Snaps seemed to take forever to reach WA, thankfully our Covid crisp shortage seems to be over (where's the damn cordial though??)

These are a crunchy combination of potato, sweet potato, beetroot and peas - from the decent-star health rating they seem to tick a box, anyway. Texturally they are quite firm, I can't think of anything equivalent here... Maybe a thicker Walker's Square for those from the UK.

Flavour-wise, I don't see why they needed Himalayan Pink salt to make something that tasteless. I'm being a little mean there; the sour cream & chives are better, although the flavour description is a little dubious.

Overall, a nice new product worth trying if you like something different.

I really don't like Australian Cadbury Dairy Milk, it's way too sweet and fatty for me. I do like the English stuff, and have a soft spot for Fruit & Nut in particular.

I was reasonably impressed with Cadbury's Dark Milk, but it doesn't seem to have had much of an impact and I was curious about this new more cocoa / more milk / less sugar concoction.

I've read mixed reports on this, and that applied in my house too. It's definitely not as sweet, but I thought it had the aftertaste of cheap dark chocolate and I found that unpleasant. Another household member really liked it, however.

The jury's out, but I can't see this sticking around. Try it if you're curious. Or just get the UK stuff, you can find it in most supermarkets.

Both jarred and fresh pasta sauces have been hard to find in WA supermarkets recently, however these ones from Harvey Beef seem to have sneaked under the radar and I've usually been able to find at least one.

Available in two varieties, these are simply heat and serve, and two of the best (meat-based) pre-prepared sauces I've tried.

The beef bolognese is outstanding, and makes me wonder if I'll ever bother cooking one again. A definite family pleaser with well-developed flavour, it's the perfect consistency to throw over some pasta.

The beef cheek ragu is thicker and richer with a subtle chilli background, in some ways better but maybe not as universal. Save any leftovers for a toastie.

At around $9 each they're not cheap, but the quality is evident and there's always one my fridge. They're better than many of the $12+ jars you get sucked into buying in gourmet delis.

The Harvey Beef range also includes pies, burgers and sausages, all of which are of great quality and very reasonably priced.

Ah, it's that time of year when many flavours make their way into hot cross buns. I'm really keen to try the Coles savoury ones but haven't found them yet 😬 These are on the other end of the taste scale but sounded appealing, so why not.

Open the bag and the scent of caramel is strong. Great start. Toast and apply copious amounts of butter...and they're sweet and as described, although not particularly salty. They're a bit one-note if I had to pick on something, and one was enough.

Kids and adults will enjoy these, but I found myself craving something a bit more traditional with pockets of flavour throughout. Am I crazy??
