It's been a while since I visited Short Order Burger Co. in Fremantle, but it's always a pleasurable experience. My BBQ Bacon Cheeseburger was as good as the first time I had one, and the Nashville wings a spicy delight.

Lagoon Yallingup was a must-visit on my recent trip to the Margaret River, it's a venue that's (ashamedly) been on my to-do list for some time. The creation of chef Ben Jacob and wife Megan, it's an elegant but casual breakfast / lunch / kiosk destination with serious cooking behind the scenes.
I visited for breakfast and was impressed to see how busy the kiosk was; I was even more impressed by the quality and creativity of the breakfast menu. Perth cafes take note - we've really dropped the ball when it comes to breakfast.

- French toast, fingerlime curd, vanilla mascarpone, pistachio & mandarin. The best French toast I've had, and not just because I'm a citrus lover (but that probably helped)
- wild mushroom & truffle croquettes, poached eggs, shallot, enoki, pecorino.
Lagoon Yallingup is one of the best restaurants in the Margaret River area, and an easy choice for breakfast. Fantastic food, friendly service, family owned & operated. I can't wait to go back for lunch.

I couldn't possibly go to Satchmo and not post this behemoth of a Reuben! With corned beef, sauerkraut, cheese and Russian dressing on onion rye there's everything you need. Except a friend, because you'll probably need one to finish this 😳 @satchmocafe

Authentic Family Recipes is a small cafe / restaurant on Albany Highway in East Vic Park that serves authentic homestyle Singaporean, Indian and Malaysian foods.
There are daily specials, and fantastic curries ready to go! In the pic there's a vegetable set, meat set (lamb & chicken) and roti prata served with dahl and sambal.
If you're keen to try it (and you should be) then you'll have to get in early - it's open every day from 8am but closes at 3pm.
There's no insta but look it up on Facebook for all the details.

Mount Hawthorn's Pogo now has an all-day weekend menu - including bottomless brunch 🍹- so you can enjoy its Middle Eastern inspired dishes (and cocktails 😋) at any time of day.

It's great (and frustratingly unusual) to see something different that's also done well, but Community Coffee Co have achieved it with their new food truck.
Permanently parked outside their Subiaco HQ, the truck offers a weekly changing menu of funky Asian-style dishes such as an egg sandwich, noodles, fried chicken sandwich, curry and so on. There are plenty of add-ons to embellish your meal, and vegetarians / GF are well catered for.
Being my first visit, I had to try the "Egg Sando" with scrambled egg, cheese and paw paw chutney mayo on soft white bread. I added bacon, hash brown and hot sauce because...well, why not?
It's one of those dishes you can tell how good it was just by looking at it. There's no need to linger on individual ingredients because it's a damn fine sandwich that's soft and spicy in all the right places. I'll be back to try the rest of the menu very soon.

The first stop on my recent trip to Busselton was Alberta's, the eagerly awaited cafe / restaurant / dining space from Noma alumni Kirsty Marchant and Ben Ing.
The focus is currently coffee and baked goods, and the daily menu is frustratingly concise but completely appropriate. I didn't arrive until 11am, and the coveted tarte tatin was sold out. Thankfully, the outstanding mandarin bar, brown butter & choc chip cookie and @5sensescoffee made for an enjoyable experience.
I could happily sit at the bar all day, and I'll be visiting whenever I'm nearby. It's a delightful, friendly venue that I'd love to transport to Perth, but something tells me it wouldn't be quite the same.

No trip to Busselton would be complete without lunch at Burger Bones. It's one of my favourite places to eat anywhere, and once again secured its place at the top of the WA burger tree on our recent visit. Five burgers later 🥴
New to the menu this time was two relatively simple but damn good lunch-special burgers that cost just $15 with chips. Whether you're visiting or lucky enough to work nearby, these have to be two of the best value lunches in the south west.
If you're a Perth burger fan who hasn't been here, it really is worth the drive. @burgerbones

If you're heading to the Good Food & Wine Show this weekend, check out Adelaide's Smelly Cheese Co. for tastings and an indulgent snack!
I usually have their raclette, but this time I tried the caciocavallo, an Italian stretched-curd cheese. They serve it melted on sourdough and drizzled with chili honey 🍯
The preparation is very interesting to watch, and the end result quite delicious 🤤🧀

Feel like something different for breakfast tomorrow? Wondering where to go now Tbsp. has closed? Its sister cafe Forklore in West Perth is still open and serves a range of Asian-inspired dishes, cakes, croissants and excellent coffee.
This dish is kimchi yaki udon with confit & grilled pork belly, fried egg, onions, mushrooms, spring onions & katsuobushi (dried bonito flakes). It's big enough for two, if you're the sharing type 😜

A warm, savoury Danish from Grain Bakery would be a fantastic late night snack, especially with a hot chocolate and/or something stronger. Pity it's a bit too late for fresh baked goods 😥 Maybe in the morning...

Two Dogs Laughing is a quirky cafe hidden away in a warehouse in the Fremantle Industrial Arts Quarter. The menu reflects a variety of cuisines, although all dishes are well executed and there's something for everyone.
Everything is made in-house where possible, and there's a strong commitment to local, sustainable and native ingredients. They also make a great salted caramel milkshake 😋

Against my better judgement I decided to try one of Domino's new "Burger Joint" range. I chose the "bacon cheeseburger" pizza with beef burger pieces, American cheese slices, mozzarella, butter pickles, bacon and topped with burger sauce.
I ordered a mini version, mainly because the thought of pickles on a pizza makes me gag. Unfortunately you can't pick a base with the minis and they come as deep pan, which is like chewing through a box of tissues.
Anyway... yes, the taste is burger reminiscent but that's mainly due to the "special" sauce, which could be any supermarket one. I tried removing the pickles but one sneaked under the radar. Yuck. I didn't notice the cheese slices.
If you like Domino's and this interests you then by all means try them; I doubt you'll be desperate to order again, though. Maybe just try and get the burger sauce added to your existing favourite.

Finally found these new Popcorners in Coles, they come in Sweet & Salty, Cheese and Salted varieties.
They're a little hard to describe texture-wise, like a crispy corn thin perhaps? I couldn't taste much salt but the sweet level was just enough and I really liked these. Not sure if I'll bother trying the other flavours, though.
They're apparently healthy-ish but they're also very moreish...so I don't think that applies when you're likely to finish the entire bag in 5 minutes.
I'll be back for more.

Let's continue the limited edition chocolate theme with the new strawberry Twirl. It's a pretty straightforward offering, with a flavour that reminded me of a strawberry Freddo or Quality Street strawberry cream.
Thankfully it's not overpowering, and as long as you're not offended by fake strawberry it's worth trying, but unlikely to be life changing.

Okay, it's time to try Kit Kat Milo. Plenty has been said about these, and for once I'm happy to jump on the bandwagon - they're fantastic. This new Kit Kat comes in three varieties - standard finger-pack, block and Chunky.
The difference is in the amount of Milo on top of the wafer, making Chunky the easy winner. The other two are still nice, but they could just pass for thick chocolate if you didn't know.
I'm sure if this appeals you'll already be keen to try them, and you won't be disappointed.
Purchased in Woolworths - just $1 for the Chunky! 😋

Crunchy Honeycomb M&M's are the latest variety to hit our shelves. As you would expect they consist of honeycomb coated in chocolate, then encased in a familiar M&M shell.
I'd heard good things about these but was a little disappointed. Crunchy they are, however I found the honeycomb just a bit too bitter.
They're not unpleasant but I won't be going back for more. If anything, they reminded me how much I miss plain old crispy M&M's, and I might pick some up the next time I'm at the shops.
Worth a shot but don't get too excited.

Macca's second nugget sauce drop happened today, and it's a bit more exciting this time around.
- Curry! I love curry sauce, but for some reason you can't buy it bottled. Even the original HP variety from the UK isn't available any more. This stuff is great, and I'll be hoarding as much as I can for use on sausages, fish & chips and many things other than nuggets.
- Mighty Hot Sauce. This is an interesting one; contains milk but presumably doesn't come straight out of a cow 😋 I was expecting some boring, thin hot sauce but it has a ketchup-like texture and some real heat. Great dipping sauce.
These sauces are only available in-store and probably won't be around for long.

Caramel Maltesers. There's not much complexity here, the chocolate is caramel flavoured but otherwise they're just normal Maltesers. The caramel isn't too strong, but I found them too sweet overall. Worth trying but I wouldn't have them again in preference to the original (or better, dark).

Hungry Jacks Pop'n Chick'n 20-pack marketing vs reality. They might want to rethink the packaging... although it tastes like a low quality copy of the KFC version, so I'm not sure it's worth the effort.
That name really sucks 🤦

No doubt most readers will be familiar with Mr Kipling cakes from the UK and their Bakewell tarts. The familiar versions are made from short crust pastry layered with almond frangipane, jam, icing and a cherry on top.
We've seen Christmas ones before (with sprinkles instead of a cherry) but here's a lemon version with lemon curd, lemon sponge and lemon icing.
There's nothing really Bakewell about these but they're a mighty fine tart. If you like lemon then definitely give these a try. The flavour is spot on and the different textures are great. They also don't fall apart as easily as the originals.
These are available in major supermarkets and will be in my fridge for as long as I can find them.

So...much...chocolate; my review drawer overfloweth. But why does so much of it have to be Dairy Milk? 🍫😭🐄 Alright, here's two of the latest from Cadbury.
- I wonder if Curtis Stone has ever made a caramel slice that tastes like this. I doubt it, and he should be ashamed if he did. Tastes like someone sucked all the good stuff out of a block of Caramello.
- what's with "Chocolate Maker's" mint chip? Oh, I wanted bricklayer's ones? This dodgy marketing just draws attention to a lazy R&D effort. Less offensive than the other one, but...meh.

Alongside mozzarella sticks, creme brulee pie / McFlurry and that double Angus thingy, this week sees the first of two super-limited sauce drops from @mcdonaldsau - Cajun and the (in)famous Szechuan.
They made quite the fuss about these but only briefly. You can't get them via delivery, and they seem to be rationed in store. Despite my attempts to purchase additional ones, I only got one Szechuan (but multiple Cajun).
So how are they? The Cajun is hard to describe, kinda starts off like honey mustard with a peppery kick but ends...differently. A cross between honey mustard and Big Mac sauce was the best I could come up with. Meh.
The Szechuan is relatively thin with an overriding flavour of sesame (swipe for pics). Needs sweetness and heat. Maybe it's unusual flavours in the USA but I don't see the fuss. Probably wouldn't do again, actually.
There's two more flavours to come. Anyone know what they are?

Regular readers will know that I love orange chocolate, and it's been a particularly distressing year seeing endless products coming out in the UK. So of course I was thrilled at the release of this Instagram-unfriendly "gingery candied orange peel" Toblerone.
For orange chocolate sceptics, this may be an opportunity to change your mind as the flavour is subtly scattered throughout the chocolate. One bite orange, the next ginger. It's cleverly done, and this is a sophisticated product that clearly hasn't been developed in a hurry.
A no-brainer for orange chocolate lovers, and a worthy try for everyone else to see how it should be done.

SPC Vegemite baked beans. I'm not sure why everyone is suddenly getting worked up about these. They've been on the shelves for weeks, and I don't see what's crazy about adding some umami to a rich tomato sauce? You'd think Heinz ham and barbecue varieties never existed...
These do exactly what they say on the tin. They smell and taste of Vegemite, but in a decent ratio so they're not offensive. They're closest in colour and flavour to the aforementioned barbecue variety, but if you don't like Vegemite then these won't be for you.
if you're a baked bean fan, definitely give these a try. If you're not, just wait until Heinz start releasing all their new bean-based products here 😂
(And before anyone starts jumping up and down about tinned beans for breakfast, they are the original product introduced to the UK by Heinz in 1886. It's the ramekins of tasteless, undercooked beans that are the imitation. I've eaten breakfast at Jamie Oliver and Gordon Ramsay restaurants in the UK and the beans were tinned *rant over*)

I don't like to go into a review with preconceptions, but experience tells me sachet coffee isn't great. I don't think that's an unreasonable statement. But I enjoy a white choc mocha and can't resist anything orange so decided to give these a go.
First I tried the choc orange mocha, which tasted mostly of chocolate with a vague orange aftertaste. Not great. The gold choc tasted vaguely familiar, like a weird chocolate liqueur you get for Christmas.
The biggest issue I have is the instructions, which tells you to add a mere 150ml of water - apparently 2/3 of a mug. My final drink was less than half of a rather small mug. I'd rather know that I need two sachets for a full mug before I accidentally dilute it.
There are numerous flavours to try, but don't expect to be surprised or impressed by any of them. If you already like this kind of drink you might be satisfied, but my local cafe needn't worry.

Everything I've tried from Harvey Beef has been excellent - sausages, burgers and of course the pasta sauces that live in my fridge now. I hadn't got around to trying the pies but when I saw these satay ones in Coles I couldn't resist.
I've been guilty of buying a satay pie from a dodgy bakery on more than one occasion, and these take it to another level. They may not be authentic but there's quality beef, nuts, spice, heat and most importantly a deep, rich flavour. The meat has been cooked down enough to be very soft, and there's nothing to fault with the pastry. I even cooked them in my air fryer 😳
Highly recommended. I'll be trying the others in the range.

It's great (and frustratingly unusual) to see something different that's also done well, but Community Coffee Co have achieved it with their new food truck.
Permanently parked outside their Subiaco HQ, the truck offers a weekly changing menu of funky Asian-style dishes such as an egg sandwich, noodles, fried chicken sandwich, curry and so on. There are plenty of add-ons to embellish your meal, and vegetarians / GF are well catered for.
Being my first visit, I had to try the "Egg Sando" with scrambled egg, cheese and paw paw chutney mayo on soft white bread. I added bacon, hash brown and hot sauce because...well, why not?
It's one of those dishes you can tell how good it was just by looking at it. There's no need to linger on individual ingredients because it's a damn fine sandwich that's soft and spicy in all the right places. I'll be back to try the rest of the menu very soon.

The first stop on my recent trip to Busselton was Alberta's, the eagerly awaited cafe / restaurant / dining space from Noma alumni Kirsty Marchant and Ben Ing.
The focus is currently coffee and baked goods, and the daily menu is frustratingly concise but completely appropriate. I didn't arrive until 11am, and the coveted tarte tatin was sold out. Thankfully, the outstanding mandarin bar, brown butter & choc chip cookie and @5sensescoffee made for an enjoyable experience.
I could happily sit at the bar all day, and I'll be visiting whenever I'm nearby. It's a delightful, friendly venue that I'd love to transport to Perth, but something tells me it wouldn't be quite the same.

No trip to Busselton would be complete without lunch at Burger Bones. It's one of my favourite places to eat anywhere, and once again secured its place at the top of the WA burger tree on our recent visit. Five burgers later 🥴
New to the menu this time was two relatively simple but damn good lunch-special burgers that cost just $15 with chips. Whether you're visiting or lucky enough to work nearby, these have to be two of the best value lunches in the south west.
If you're a Perth burger fan who hasn't been here, it really is worth the drive. @burgerbones

If you're heading to the Good Food & Wine Show this weekend, check out Adelaide's Smelly Cheese Co. for tastings and an indulgent snack!
I usually have their raclette, but this time I tried the caciocavallo, an Italian stretched-curd cheese. They serve it melted on sourdough and drizzled with chili honey 🍯
The preparation is very interesting to watch, and the end result quite delicious 🤤🧀

Feel like something different for breakfast tomorrow? Wondering where to go now Tbsp. has closed? Its sister cafe Forklore in West Perth is still open and serves a range of Asian-inspired dishes, cakes, croissants and excellent coffee.
This dish is kimchi yaki udon with confit & grilled pork belly, fried egg, onions, mushrooms, spring onions & katsuobushi (dried bonito flakes). It's big enough for two, if you're the sharing type 😜

A warm, savoury Danish from Grain Bakery would be a fantastic late night snack, especially with a hot chocolate and/or something stronger. Pity it's a bit too late for fresh baked goods 😥 Maybe in the morning...

Two Dogs Laughing is a quirky cafe hidden away in a warehouse in the Fremantle Industrial Arts Quarter. The menu reflects a variety of cuisines, although all dishes are well executed and there's something for everyone.
Everything is made in-house where possible, and there's a strong commitment to local, sustainable and native ingredients. They also make a great salted caramel milkshake 😋

Against my better judgement I decided to try one of Domino's new "Burger Joint" range. I chose the "bacon cheeseburger" pizza with beef burger pieces, American cheese slices, mozzarella, butter pickles, bacon and topped with burger sauce.
I ordered a mini version, mainly because the thought of pickles on a pizza makes me gag. Unfortunately you can't pick a base with the minis and they come as deep pan, which is like chewing through a box of tissues.
Anyway... yes, the taste is burger reminiscent but that's mainly due to the "special" sauce, which could be any supermarket one. I tried removing the pickles but one sneaked under the radar. Yuck. I didn't notice the cheese slices.
If you like Domino's and this interests you then by all means try them; I doubt you'll be desperate to order again, though. Maybe just try and get the burger sauce added to your existing favourite.

Finally found these new Popcorners in Coles, they come in Sweet & Salty, Cheese and Salted varieties.
They're a little hard to describe texture-wise, like a crispy corn thin perhaps? I couldn't taste much salt but the sweet level was just enough and I really liked these. Not sure if I'll bother trying the other flavours, though.
They're apparently healthy-ish but they're also very moreish...so I don't think that applies when you're likely to finish the entire bag in 5 minutes.
I'll be back for more.

Let's continue the limited edition chocolate theme with the new strawberry Twirl. It's a pretty straightforward offering, with a flavour that reminded me of a strawberry Freddo or Quality Street strawberry cream.
Thankfully it's not overpowering, and as long as you're not offended by fake strawberry it's worth trying, but unlikely to be life changing.

Okay, it's time to try Kit Kat Milo. Plenty has been said about these, and for once I'm happy to jump on the bandwagon - they're fantastic. This new Kit Kat comes in three varieties - standard finger-pack, block and Chunky.
The difference is in the amount of Milo on top of the wafer, making Chunky the easy winner. The other two are still nice, but they could just pass for thick chocolate if you didn't know.
I'm sure if this appeals you'll already be keen to try them, and you won't be disappointed.
Purchased in Woolworths - just $1 for the Chunky! 😋

Crunchy Honeycomb M&M's are the latest variety to hit our shelves. As you would expect they consist of honeycomb coated in chocolate, then encased in a familiar M&M shell.
I'd heard good things about these but was a little disappointed. Crunchy they are, however I found the honeycomb just a bit too bitter.
They're not unpleasant but I won't be going back for more. If anything, they reminded me how much I miss plain old crispy M&M's, and I might pick some up the next time I'm at the shops.
Worth a shot but don't get too excited.

Macca's second nugget sauce drop happened today, and it's a bit more exciting this time around.
- Curry! I love curry sauce, but for some reason you can't buy it bottled. Even the original HP variety from the UK isn't available any more. This stuff is great, and I'll be hoarding as much as I can for use on sausages, fish & chips and many things other than nuggets.
- Mighty Hot Sauce. This is an interesting one; contains milk but presumably doesn't come straight out of a cow 😋 I was expecting some boring, thin hot sauce but it has a ketchup-like texture and some real heat. Great dipping sauce.
These sauces are only available in-store and probably won't be around for long.

Caramel Maltesers. There's not much complexity here, the chocolate is caramel flavoured but otherwise they're just normal Maltesers. The caramel isn't too strong, but I found them too sweet overall. Worth trying but I wouldn't have them again in preference to the original (or better, dark).

Hungry Jacks Pop'n Chick'n 20-pack marketing vs reality. They might want to rethink the packaging... although it tastes like a low quality copy of the KFC version, so I'm not sure it's worth the effort.

No doubt most readers will be familiar with Mr Kipling cakes from the UK and their Bakewell tarts. The familiar versions are made from short crust pastry layered with almond frangipane, jam, icing and a cherry on top.
We've seen Christmas ones before (with sprinkles instead of a cherry) but here's a lemon version with lemon curd, lemon sponge and lemon icing.
There's nothing really Bakewell about these but they're a mighty fine tart. If you like lemon then definitely give these a try. The flavour is spot on and the different textures are great. They also don't fall apart as easily as the originals.
These are available in major supermarkets and will be in my fridge for as long as I can find them.

So...much...chocolate; my review drawer overfloweth. But why does so much of it have to be Dairy Milk? 🍫😭🐄 Alright, here's two of the latest from Cadbury.
- I wonder if Curtis Stone has ever made a caramel slice that tastes like this. I doubt it, and he should be ashamed if he did. Tastes like someone sucked all the good stuff out of a block of Caramello.
- what's with "Chocolate Maker's" mint chip? Oh, I wanted bricklayer's ones? This dodgy marketing just draws attention to a lazy R&D effort. Less offensive than the other one, but...meh.

Alongside mozzarella sticks, creme brulee pie / McFlurry and that double Angus thingy, this week sees the first of two super-limited sauce drops from @mcdonaldsau - Cajun and the (in)famous Szechuan.
They made quite the fuss about these but only briefly. You can't get them via delivery, and they seem to be rationed in store. Despite my attempts to purchase additional ones, I only got one Szechuan (but multiple Cajun).
So how are they? The Cajun is hard to describe, kinda starts off like honey mustard with a peppery kick but ends...differently. A cross between honey mustard and Big Mac sauce was the best I could come up with. Meh.
The Szechuan is relatively thin with an overriding flavour of sesame (swipe for pics). Needs sweetness and heat. Maybe it's unusual flavours in the USA but I don't see the fuss. Probably wouldn't do again, actually.
There's two more flavours to come. Anyone know what they are?

Regular readers will know that I love orange chocolate, and it's been a particularly distressing year seeing endless products coming out in the UK. So of course I was thrilled at the release of this Instagram-unfriendly "gingery candied orange peel" Toblerone.
For orange chocolate sceptics, this may be an opportunity to change your mind as the flavour is subtly scattered throughout the chocolate. One bite orange, the next ginger. It's cleverly done, and this is a sophisticated product that clearly hasn't been developed in a hurry.
A no-brainer for orange chocolate lovers, and a worthy try for everyone else to see how it should be done.

SPC Vegemite baked beans. I'm not sure why everyone is suddenly getting worked up about these. They've been on the shelves for weeks, and I don't see what's crazy about adding some umami to a rich tomato sauce? You'd think Heinz ham and barbecue varieties never existed...
These do exactly what they say on the tin. They smell and taste of Vegemite, but in a decent ratio so they're not offensive. They're closest in colour and flavour to the aforementioned barbecue variety, but if you don't like Vegemite then these won't be for you.
if you're a baked bean fan, definitely give these a try. If you're not, just wait until Heinz start releasing all their new bean-based products here 😂
(And before anyone starts jumping up and down about tinned beans for breakfast, they are the original product introduced to the UK by Heinz in 1886. It's the ramekins of tasteless, undercooked beans that are the imitation. I've eaten breakfast at Jamie Oliver and Gordon Ramsay restaurants in the UK and the beans were tinned *rant over*)

I don't like to go into a review with preconceptions, but experience tells me sachet coffee isn't great. I don't think that's an unreasonable statement. But I enjoy a white choc mocha and can't resist anything orange so decided to give these a go.
First I tried the choc orange mocha, which tasted mostly of chocolate with a vague orange aftertaste. Not great. The gold choc tasted vaguely familiar, like a weird chocolate liqueur you get for Christmas.
The biggest issue I have is the instructions, which tells you to add a mere 150ml of water - apparently 2/3 of a mug. My final drink was less than half of a rather small mug. I'd rather know that I need two sachets for a full mug before I accidentally dilute it.
There are numerous flavours to try, but don't expect to be surprised or impressed by any of them. If you already like this kind of drink you might be satisfied, but my local cafe needn't worry.

Everything I've tried from Harvey Beef has been excellent - sausages, burgers and of course the pasta sauces that live in my fridge now. I hadn't got around to trying the pies but when I saw these satay ones in Coles I couldn't resist.
I've been guilty of buying a satay pie from a dodgy bakery on more than one occasion, and these take it to another level. They may not be authentic but there's quality beef, nuts, spice, heat and most importantly a deep, rich flavour. The meat has been cooked down enough to be very soft, and there's nothing to fault with the pastry. I even cooked them in my air fryer 😳
Highly recommended. I'll be trying the others in the range.
