A quick breakfast at Secondeli, Mount Lawley

SecondeliIt’s hard to keep up with the number of new cafes opening in Perth these days! Surely it’s going to slow down soon..? Recently joining the party is Secondeli on the corner of Second Avenue and Beaufort Street in Mount Lawley. Feedback online has been good, so I decided to pay them a visit for breakfast today.

As is normal for me, I was up fairly early this Sunday morning, and was surprised to see the advertised opening time of Secondeli to be 6am, seven days a week. Surely not, I thought…but it turns out that they do indeed open at 6am for coffee, and food service starts at 6:30am. Fantastic.

I always feel like I’m in the minority when it comes to early breakfast (ie well before 8am) – especially on Sundays – although early start times seem to be the norm interstate and even in places like Margaret river.

SecondeliThere’s plenty of seating inside and out, and there’s lots of natural light which is always nice. The staff were all very friendly and happy to engage in conversation from the moment I walked through the door.

Coffee is from Five Senses, which always gets a big thumbs up from me.

SecondeliAs well as an impressive assortment of sweet treats at the counter, the all-day (6:30am-2:30pm) menu includes a variety of breakfast options such as the usual eggs on toast ($11) with extras, coconut pancakes with salted caramel sauce, bananas, hazelnuts & cream ($14), shakshuka with merguez sausages, poached egg, labne, dukkah & toast ($16) and sundried tomato & spinach bake with smoked salmon and poached egg ($16).

More lunch-y options include a beef burger with caramelised onions, tomato chutney & chips ($22), charmoulla chicken & quinoa salad with hummus, tomato, cucumber, feta, hazelnut & maple syrup dressing ($17) and crumbed chicken breast with caramelised onion beetroot and harissa sauce (yum! $17). There’s plenty of options for any time of day, and the menu seems to be reasonably priced.

I ordered the “Berber breakfast”, with meatballs, tomato ragout, a fried egg and toast ($16), which turned out to be one of those glorious dishes you could happily eat at any time of day (and would be fantastic to warm your bones in winter). If I could make a tomato ragout that rich and spicy I doubt I’d eat much else.ย  If this is your kind of dish, give it a try and you won’t be disappointed.

It was only a quick solo visit to Secondeli today, but I was very impressed with the coffee, food & friendly service so it’s a definite recommendation from me, and I’ll be going back soon.
