New Nedlands eatery Masa Mesa opens this Friday 13th February, celebrating Latin American flavours with an offering of street eats including empanadas, pupusas and tacos.ย
The new venue has been two decades in the making for chef Erick Martinez and wife Lara, who envisaged a casual dining venue that would unite the community over comforting, nourishing dishes from around Latin America.ย

Erick has worked in some of Perthโs top kitchens including Tinyโs, Duende, Andaluz Bar & Tapas and, most recently, private membersโ club Lawson Flats.ย Upon finding the perfect venue in Nedlands, the couple decided it was time to launch their own venture.
Masa Mesa combines their El Salvadoran (Erick) and Argentinian (Lara) backgrounds with their extensive travels throughout Latin America.

Pupusas are the hero of the menu: handmade masa tortillas filled with melted cheese and pork or spinach with black beans, which are then griddled and served with house-pickled cabbage slaw and fresh tomato salsa.ย
The larger asado plates are ideal for sharing and feature specialty butcher cuts paired with traditional sides and zesty condiments.ย Meat is cooked the Argentinian way on a parrilla (open BBQ grill). Sweet cravings can be satisfied with churros and alfajores (dulche de leche cookies).

โWe were inspired by our childhood memories of rich, home-cooked food but we decided to go a step further by encompassing broader Latin American influences through Masa Mesa,โ says Erick.
โWe’re excited to share a taste of Latino culture with the community.ย Our familyโs heart and soul has gone into creating every element, down to engaging with local producers to source premium ingredients and fine-tuning recipes until they are perfectly balanced.โย
The drinks menu has been equally considered with house-made Horchata which Erick grew up with and Agua Fresca, as well as offering classic Latin cocktails with a twist, co-curated with Hugo Borralho, distiller of Spirit of Little Things.ย

Given its close proximity to UWA and the Queen Elizabeth II Medical Centre, Masa Mesa is set to become a favourite among shift workers and students, as well as those travelling from other suburbs.ย
Masa Mesa is open for lunch and dinner six days a week, with service running non-stop during opening hours.ย
