Truffle Kerfuffle is unquestionably a highlight of the WA foodie calendar. Set at Manjimup’s picturesque Fonty’s Pool, it’s a festival with an atmosphere all of its own and the perfect showcase for one of the world’s most luxurious ingredients.
More truffles are found in Manjimup than anywhere else in the Southern Hemisphere.
If you’ve never tasted black truffle – truffle oil doesn’t count – forget what you think you know. It’s a unique, delicate flavour best enjoyed fresh and there’s no better place to try it than at Truffle Kerfuffle.
TK is a festival all about passion and quality, free of the commercialism that you see at more mainstream festivals.
Work kept me away from TK last year so I’m looking forward to heading south in June.
My personal highlight from previous years is Russell Blaikie’s 2017 “Hunter’s Breakfast”. It still ranks as one of my all-time favourite meals and you can see pictures in the gallery below. That truffled croque monsieur still makes me hungry…
I’ve already bought my tickets to this year’s breakfast 😉
The festival village is open from 10am on Saturday and Sunday. You can taste your way through the regional marketplace, buy fresh truffles and gourmet products, sample Southern Forests wine and cider, and dig into delicious truffle-laden food.
You’ll meet farmers, truffle growers, winemakers and chefs, enjoy live music, cooking and truffle dog demonstrations. It’s a great event for the whole family, with special kids activities including a truffle science station and cooking school.
An entry ticket to the village costs $35 and covers both days. Children 15 years and under enter for free.
This year’s headline chef is MKR’s Pete Evans who will be cooking a Southern Forests Feast on the Friday night and a “wholesome breakfast” on the Sunday.
Some key events on this year’s program are:
- Magical Manjimup brunch with Aaron Carr and Mary Street Bakery
- Wholesome winter brunch with Pete Evans
- L’Elegante Tartufo dinner with Nic Wood and Melissa Palinkas
- Enchanted Southern Forests Feast with Pete Evans
- Fervor lunch and masterclass
- Chef’s Cabin Series with Pete Evans, Paul Iskov, Amy Hamilton, Russell Blaikie and Poh.
- Truffle hunting with Australian Truffle Traders
There will be free cooking and recipe demonstrations by Pete Evans, Poh, Anna Gare, Aaron Carr, Paul Iskov, Melissa Palinkas, Amy Hamilton, Sophie Budd & more.
Manjimup is a leisurely 3.5 hour drive from Perth, or 90 minutes if you’re starting in Margaret River. There’s plenty to see, do and taste all around the Southern Forests region, which includes Manjimup, Pemberton, Northcliffe and Walpole.
There’s plenty of accommodation of all types in the area, including at Fonty’s Pool chalet and caravan park itself.
Over 50 different types of fruit and vegetables are produced in the Southern Forests region, including 50% of WA’s apples and 70% of Australia’s avocados. And don’t forget the delicious marron…
Truffle Kerfuffle 2019 runs from June 21-23. See the Truffle Kerfuffle website for more information and to purchase tickets to the Festival Village and all events.
