Well… Regular readers of this blog will remember the fuss caused when KFC in America brought out the Double Down, a burger that used two chicken fillets in place of a bun. What you may not have heard, however, is that today saw the launch of this beast  in Australia, as part of KFC’s “Month of Mantime” promotion. Not being particularly manly, I couldn’t care less about that –  just unleash the beast!

In a highly unusual turn of events, we have had a variety of KFC in Australia that you don’t get in the USA, “hot & spicy” (although a look at the online menu today makes me wonder if it’s days are numbered?). So I was excited to see that there is a “Zinger” version of the Double Down (just called “The Double” for reasons unknown, and which I will choose to ignore), which includes spicy sauce instead of the barbecue sauce found in the standard variety. Luckily I was late home from work tonight,  giving me the perfect opportunity / excuse to try this much anticipated treat…

The Double Down comes sealed in a silver packet with a removable rip-tag – nice touch.

So how was it? I’m sorry to say that it was one of the most disgusting things I’ve ever attempted to eat. Biting into two fillets of KFC chicken at once is just too much, made worse by the gooey slimy cheese, bacon and sauce in the middle. I got about a third of the way through, pulled it apart and tried to pick at it but couldn’t get much further. I still feel sick just thinking about it. As for the fries, they’re orange and smell like sweet potato but were horribly soggy and salty.
