Ice Cream vs Gelato – What’s the Difference?

I’ve named 2026 my “Year of the Anti-Influencer”, in that I’m going to call out bullshit, laziness, non-declarations and untruths when I see them. It’s pleasing to see a backlash against influencers starting overseas, and it’s time we started calling them to account in Australia.

One of my biggest annoyances is the apparent interchangeability of ice cream and gelato when they’re two very different things. You may think I’m being pedantic, and of course they are similar, but I don’t see it any differently to confusing wine and beer, or beef and chicken.

Here’s a handy poster I photographed on the side of a gelato pop-up stand while travelling in Malaysia last year. Ice cream and gelato are very different in texture and flavour so it’s surprising they are so often confused, but clearly this is an international problem.

Influencers and publications that don’t make the distinction either:

  1. don’t know
  2. don’t care
  3. know, but are only interested in your views / likes / clicks

…and none of the above benefits consumers or the food industry.

If you’re following someone that fits one of the above categories, maybe it’s time for an unfollow.
