Market Eating House is an essential destination when dining in Bunbury, and it’s long been one of my favourite WA restaurants. Opened by husband and wife team Brenton and Bec Pyke in late 2015, it specialises in Middle Eastern flavours and from-the-fire cooking.
Chef Brenton started his career in Bunbury at a local catering company, then continued his education under a traditional French chef at the Duxton Hotel. He went on to hold Head Chef roles at numerous venues including Andaluz Bar & Tapas and George Calombarisโ Little Press in Melbourne.

The Old Lyric, also in Bunbury, is Market Eating House’s sister venue. Nestled within Bunbury’s iconic 1905-vintage Lyric Theatre building, it was home of one of Western Australiaโs earliest cinemas.
The reimagined venue is suitable for weddings, corporate functions, private dinners, group workshops, and live music events. It also hosts a limited number of intimate cooking classes led by Brenton.

We attended the “From the Fire” class in early May, which made use of the venue’s charcoal grill (Hibachi) and impressive Gozney wood and gas-powered pizza oven.
The class focused on fire cooking techniques for meat, seafood, and vegetables, teaching skills that can be transfered to backyard cooking.

The class lasted around four-and-a-half hours including demonstrations, hands-on activities and a sit-down meal at the end. The hands-on component involved the making of individual mushroom flat-breads from scratch.

The gaps between each hands-on stage – proofing and kneading – were filled with Brenton’s cooking demonstrations. A hand-out containing all recipes was provided, and there was plenty of time for Q&A and photos through the day.

The day concluded with a sit-down lunch featuring all the food cooked during the class, including a delicious selection of beef, chicken, cuttlefish, vegetables and condiments.

We really enjoyed the cooking class, and would recommend this for individuals, couples or groups. The day was well-organised and well-paced, and the final meal a delight. Making your own flat-breads was an interesting challenge, with the end-result a surprisingly decent snack. Well worth the drive.
The next cooking class with Brenton is “From the Sea”, a seafood masterclass featuring the best of Western Australiaโs ocean produce. This class is on Saturday, 21 June 2025 at The Old Lyric at a cost of $210pp.
