Brunch Review: Testun

I obviously eat out a lot, and some meals stand out more than others, for good or bad. One meal firmly in the first category was the recent one-off Sunday brunch at Italian bar Testun. I reserved a spot immediately, not sure what to expect but knowing I wouldn’t be disappointed.

After much deliberation I chose the porchetta baked beans with slow cooked duck egg, cheese and arepas. This was incredibly rich, the childhood cheesy beans of my dreams.

The added richness of the duck egg was completely unnecessary… but of course, that’s the point. And one thing I’ve come to realise is that the joy of quality American cheese cannot be overrated.

I was fortunate enough to also try the lightly crisp banh-mi style fried chicken and excellent smashed avo with house-cured NZ smoked salmon on focaccia. Too early for a coffee cocktail? Don’t be silly. I needed a nap after all that anyway.

I did suggest that Sunday brunch become a regular thing, an idea received with less enthusiasm than I was hoping for, given their tendency to work Saturday nights. Damn. Fingers crossed for an Easter brunch-residency *hint hint*

Coming off a one-star win at the WA Good Food Guide (and two-star at Threecoins & Sons), the Testun crew never fails to deliver. A dish might look crazy on paper, but there will be considerable thought behind that crazy, and it will be served with genuine hospitality.

The Testun team offers something truly different with a no-compromises and no-apologies attitude. Perth is lucky to have them.
