Perfect eggs, but a rather odd experience at Six Willows, Willetton

Six Willows

Six Willows in Willetton is a new cafe that’s been making a few waves on social media since it opened in July, in partย thanks to pictures of some rather good looking milkshakes.

Having been impressed by the newย Timber Cafe in Harrisdale, we headedย south of the river again last weekย to see what all the fuss was about.

Six WillowsWhen we arrived there were three staff behind the counter, although our entry wasn’t acknowledged by any of them so we sat down at a table and waited. After a few minutes, Renayย went looking for a menu.

Ordering at the counterย was aย strangeย experience, I almost felt the need toย apologise just for being there. After my paymentย was taken I waited for theย EFTPOS receipt, but no paperworkย or further eye contactย was forthcoming and after a rather awkward pause I headed back to ourย table.

There seemed to be some confusion in the kitchen, I could hear them discussingย what was going to beย served on each plate. Maybe someone was off sick and they had temporary staff in, it was all rather odd.

Six WillowsCoffee is from Brisbane-based roasterย Di Bella. I ordered my usual long mac and was offered it in a mug with a triple-shot, which sounded like a good idea at the time but it was too strong, and remained largely in the cup.

Six Willows servesย a large range ofย interesting drinks, including red ones made with rooibos tea, and of course lots of matcha. I should have gone for a Nutella shake.

Six WillowsDespite the oddities with the service – and surprisingย amount of microwaving going on in the very open kitchen – the food was quite decent.

Renay ordered the tomato & mushroom bruschetta ($11) which was good value and quite delicious, made with quality sourdough and a generous serving of fresh parmesan on top.ย You can see the full food menu here.

Six WillowsI ordered the “Rustic Breakfast” with 60-degree eggs, dukkah, pea puree, bacon, mushrooms and potato rosti ย ($18). The bacon was okayย but there wasn’t much of it, the mushrooms were nice, the rosti tasted strangeย – lemon? – and I didn’t get any pea puree. I’m not sure what the spinach was doing on the plate.

Six WillowsThe one thing impossible to fault about this breakfast was the 60-degree eggs. Wow. Perfect. You can order two of these on sourdough for a mere $6, which is ridiculously cheap. And now makes me wonder why my meal was $18..?

Our breakfastย at Six Willows was oddย from start to finish, and thisย was not what I was expecting given their seeminglyย organised presence on social media. I think there’s a great experience in there trying to get out, but it’s not readyย yet.

Go for the eggs, not for the service.
