Meat & Mains, Perth’s first chef-owned butchery, is the resident butcher in Mount Hawthorn’s The Mezz. It offers pre-made meals, a wide range of prime cuts and some very decadent sandwiches. Owner Tom Randolph is perhaps best known from his days as owner and chef of fine-diner No 4. Blake Street.
Tom holds in-store “steak appreciation” evenings, covering how best to use and cook seven cuts across five courses. Steaks featured include grain and grass-fed, wet and dry aged, and two distinct tomahawks.
I attended last month as Tom’s guest. During the class you’ll get to try a range of dishes from tacos to an exceptionally good steak sandwich, with plenty of offcuts to gnaw on if you’re still peckish. I cannot stress enough – make sure you come hungry.
Tom is a great storyteller and brings experience and passion to the class, making for an informative, entertaining and delicious evening. Classes last for 90 minutes and cost $100 per person, for 10-12 guests.
Meat & Mains sells pre-packed meats and meals in two-portion packs for $15 each or 3 for $40. There are family-sized dishes such as moussaka and lasagne, too.
Christmas orders are now open so whether you want a turkey, ham, beef wellington, or just some help with the trimmings, Meat & Mains is well worth visiting. Make sure you grab a sandwich or sausage roll while you’re there.
