Le Vietnam is a banh mi “specialist” with two outlets in Perth CBD, one at 80 Barrack Street and the other at 92 William Street, sandwiched (if you’ll pardon the pun) in between KFC and Hungry Jacks. We went to the William Street outlet for lunch today – it’s not a particularly classy location, but it gets the job done.
They offer traditional, premium and vegetarian banh mi varieties with fillings such as spicy pork, lemon grass chicken and peri-peri tofu to go with the usual ingredients. The pricing is very reasonable, especially for the CBD ($6 / $8). There were also two specials available today, for $10 each – crispy chicken karaage and roast pork with crackling.
I tried the chicken, which was crunchy but still moist, the only thing I would have liked is more of it!ย My workmate Andrew tried the roast pork which he found to be a little greasy. I preferred the bread to some I’ve had before, it was crunchy but didn’t shatter into a million pieces on first bite. The William Street store is currently serving free waffle fries with every banh mi, which was an unexpected bonus. They were light and crispy, and nicely accompanied by a drizzle ofย sriracha & mayo.
Le Vietnam receives bonus points for service, which was very friendly today. We were also each given a loyalty card, which gives every tenth banh mi free. Our rolls were prepared very quickly, and came packed in sturdy boxes which allowed them to survive our walk back to the office in the rain. Seating is available, but I wouldn’t recommend it.
So all in all a positive banh mi experience for us today at La Vietnam. The different varieties are interesting, but they will struggle to take us away from City Provisions on Hay Street which is close to our office and marginally wins the day when it comes to overall banh mi goodness. Although they don’t have waffle fries…
