A quick visit to The Sweet Remedy Cafe for a Cupshake…

The Sweet Remedy Cafe

Sometimes there’s something that you just have to drop everything to try, and for me that was the new “Cupshake” from The Sweet Remedy Cafe in Leederville. As you may have guessed, this drink involves taking a cupcake of your choosing and blending it with milk & ice cream.

I’ve heard of all sorts of things being blended into shakes in the USA, and we’re starting to see it here now – Babooshka are putting doughnuts into their creations, and there’s an Apple Pie Shake at Ribs & Burgers which I have tried, but that’s another story…

The Sweet Remedy Cafe

Located on an Oxford Street corner just out of the centre of Leederville (past Pixel Coffee & The Re Store), The Sweet Remedy Cafe is pretty simple inside – a counter full of cakes and a few savoury items, and coffee making equipment up top. You get the impression that they only do a few things, but they do them very well.

It’s a husband-and-wife owned business, and this showed in the cheerful service and family-friendly atmosphere. The pricing is also very reasonable, as you can see.

The difficult bit with the Cusphake ($8) is choosing your flavour of cupcake – it seems a pity to blend them as they’re very pretty. I went for choc-mint, although it was very nearly salted caramel.

The finished shake was really nice – surprisingly light, and not mouthfuls of soggy cake as I half-expected it to be. The flavour of the mint really came through and this was a really enjoyable drink, different from a “normal” shake without being as extreme as some of the heart-attack-in-a-Mason-jar concoctions being served around town.

It was approaching lunch time so I planned to grab something savoury to go with my shake, but was immediately drawn to a palmier ($4), one of my favourite pastries. It was crisp on of the outside and soft on the inside but still keeping the defined layers of pastry, and also not too sweet. Hit the spot very nicely.

My visit to The Sweet Remedy was a quick one but I was impressed with their excellent (and unique) product and friendly service at reasonable prices. Definitely one to put on the must-visit-list for lovers of cupcakes and milkshakes – everyone, basically!
